Twitter is a social media network based on short posts limited to 280 characters. The social platform was founded by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams in 2006, as a microblogging network with a 140 character count limit. As of, 2017, Twitter boasted 330 million active users. News organizations use Twitter as an important way to find out what people are talking about and feeling as related to the big stories of the day. News also breaks and spreads on Twitter due to its reputation as a popular microblogging network among public figures. Celebrities, politicians, and other public figures use Twitter every day to connect with fans and put their opinions out into the world. J.K. Rowling, for example, uses Twitter as a way to support discussions around her Harry Potter novels and add to the discussion years after the books were written. President Donald Trump, for his part, uses Twitter nearly every day to further his policy goals and posture on the public stage. Trump has also made a number of missteps on Twitter, from his infamous “covfefe” typo tweet, to joking about nuclear war with North Korea.
